IIT (BHU) will play a key role in making Varanasi a smart cit
Varanasi. The Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, Government of India, is in the process of improving major cities across the country under the Smart City Mission. In order to make Varanasi city a smart city under this mission, on Friday, an agreement was signed between Indian Institute of Technology (Banaras Hindu University) and Varanasi Smart City Limited. On this occasion, Director of the Institute Prof. Pramod Kumar Jain and Chief Executive Officer of Varanasi Smart City Limited and Municipal Commissioner Mr. Gaurang Rathi were present.
Speaking on the occasion, Director Professor Pramod Kumar Jain said that the objective of this agreement is to further increase the involvement of faculty and students of the Institute in the development of the city. The scope of the collaboration is verification of all design (especially the structural designs) and drawings for the development of the city by Varanasi Smart City Limited will be evaluated by the experts of the Institute. Along with this, the team of experts of the Institute will occasionally visit to project sites during construction/implementation for quality check of materials and finished products to ensure compliance to national and international standards. He informed that the involvement of citizens of Varanasi will be encouraged by organizing conclave with experts of the Institute and advice/feedback will be taken so that meaningful initiatives can be taken to solve the basic problems of the city.
Under this agreement, involvements of IIT(BHU) students to work as interns and fellow in project assignment with VSCL, so the idea of young mind and future professionals are factored into the development and sustenance of the city. In addition, the company will also organize various competitions Ideathons, Business Plan Competition for the students of the Institute, so that opinions and ideas can be harvested and if suitable, incorporated in various projects design for the development of Varanasi city.
