IIT(BHU) and IIT Guwahati will start joint PhD programme

Varanasi: A memorandum of understanding has been signed between IIT (BHU), Varanasi and IIT Guwahati in a virtual meeting held on Friday (27 November 2020). Under this MoU, IIT (BHU), Varanasi & IIT Guwahati will start Joint Doctoral Programme in July 2021. Directors of both the Institute’s professor Pramod Kumar Jain, Director, IIT(BHU) and Professor T.G. Sitharam, Director, IIT Guwahati said this is the first time in the country that two IITs have come together to offer a joint degree program.

The idea of a joint PhD program was originally proposed in 53rd IIT Council meeting held on 27th September 2019. The vision behind this to build a “Network of Excellence” of all IITs rather than each one striving to become a “Tower of Excellence”. The IIT Council accepted the proposal to start Joint Degree Program. Through this academic collaboration, both the institutes are expecting a significant boost in high quality Research and foundation for further academic collaborations. Considering the National Education Policy (NEP-2020), such educational reform and academic collaborations between the premier Educational Institutes will promote multi-disciplinary academic program and research for knowledge based economy of the country. IIT(BHU) and IIT Guwahati are also considering to start a joint M.Tech program on the similar line to provide multi-institutional and multidisciplinary and M.Tech programs.

Maximum ten students in IIT(BHU) and maximum ten research students in IIT Guwahati will be able to register for research in subjects of Engineering, Science and Humanity. These researchers will have two separate supervisors & the facility to do research work in both the institutes. Research students will be awarded joint degrees by both Institutes. However, it will be compulsory for research students to do at least one year of research work in both Institutes.

At MoU signing event, from IIT(BHU) Prof. S.B. Dwivedi, Dean, Academic Affairs, Dr. Vikash Kumar Dubey, Associate Dean, Academic Affairs & Dr. Rajesh Kumar Upadhyay, Associate Professor, Department of Chemical Engineering were present and from IIT Guwahati side Prof. Kalpesh Kapoor, Dean, outreach Education Programme, Prof. Chitralekha Mahanta, Dean of Academic Affairs were present.
