Priest beaten to death in Azamgarh

Azamgarh: An 80-year-old priest Ramchandra Das, who was allegedly beaten severely by a liquor addict on Friday, succumbed to injuries during treatment at the district hospital on Sunday. The accused was arrested.

According to reports, Das was a priest at a temple in Gulaur village in Mubarakpur police station area of Azamgarh district. He was beaten badly by a drunkard Mrityunjay of neighbouring Bijarwa village when he denied giving money to him to buy liquor.

Hundreds of local residents blocked Azamgarh-Gorakhpur highway and staged massive demonstration on Sunday afternoon in protest against the killing. The police had to toil hard to convince them to call off their stir.

According to the SP Sudhir Kumar Singh, the priest had sustained grave head injuries, and he died during the course of treatment. He said that the accused was arrested on Saturday and sent to the jail.
