SP team to investigate Azamgarh incident

Varanasi: A seven-member team of Samajwadi Party will investigate the alleged police action on women protesting against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act and National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Bilariaganj area of Azamgarh district on February 5.

According to the office communique issued on Friday by the SP state president Naresh Uttam Patel, the committee will visit Azamgarh on Saturday to look into the incident of police action and arrest of 19 persons. The committee will submit its report to the Azamgarh MP and former chief minister Akhilesh Yadav on February 9.

The committee comprises of MLA and former minister Durga Prasad Yadav, Ram Murty Verma (former minister), Nafees Ahmed (MLA), Sangram Singh (MLA), Subhash Rai (MLA) Ramjatan Rajbhar (MLC), and Rakesh Kumar alias Guddu (MLC). The former district president Hawaldar Yadav will assist the committee to prepare the report.

On February 5, the police had cracked down the protesters to end their dharna at Jauhar Ali Bagh in Bilariaganj area of Azamgarh district. The police had used force and tear gas to disperse the gathering when a group of locals allegedly indulged in brick batting on police. However, the police had denied any lathi charge on protesting women.
