CM’s mantra for making UP 1-trillion-dollar economy

Lucknow: Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has set an ambitious target of making the country’s economy five trillion dollars by the year 2022. “Uttar Pradesh, with the largest population, will play an important role in this. This could be made possible only when the state’s economy becomes 1 trillion dollar within the set time limit. For this, sector-wise long and short term strategy has to be made. Good governance, rapid decision making and implementation, cooperation from top academic institutions and teamwork will have to be the core mantra,” said the CM.

The CM while watching the presentations of suggestions invited from various reputed institutions including World Bank, Asian Development Bank, IIMs, PWC, Ernst and Young and others on making the GDP one-trillion-dollar at the Lok Bhavan on Friday, said that for this the Centre and the state governments have taken various steps like development of infrastructure and employment through skill development. For effective implementation of these steps, two cabinet committees and one high-level committee have been formed.

The CM said that about 17 percent of the country’s population lives in Uttar Pradesh, but its share in the country’s GDP is just a little more than eight percent. Due to this gap, the possibilities also increase here. “Investors should come forward for better benefits of these possibilities. For this, we have formed new and better policies in every sector. Law and order has been given top priority. Efforts are on to strengthen the infrastructure. Our position has improved in ‘ease of doing business’. The perception about the state has changed among people. Successful investors’ summit and two ground-breaking ceremonies are example of this. For achieving the target, we will keep making improvements from time to time,” said the CM.

In their presentations, the Indian Institute of Management-Lucknow, Bengaluru and Ernst and Young suggested ways to achieve the one-trillion-dollar target. According to them, for achieving the target, implementation will play 70% role. Lessons will have to be learnt from those states (Gujarat, Maharashtra) and countries (China, Bangladesh, Malaysia and Singapore) that have made progress in the recent years. More attention will have to be given to sectors such as manufacturing, services and agro-processing.

Other suggestions:

• Identification of potential areas.

• Development of industrial clusters near major cities.

• Skill development according to these clusters.

• Support and suggestions of local level educational institutions, engineering colleges, management institutes and universities.

• Creation of posts like a Mayor or Chief Executive Officer for each cluster.

• Constant monitoring from the Chief Minister’s Office.

• Determining deadlines for each goal.

• If the goal is not achieved, then seeking the flaws and removing them.

•Making the process of ‘Ease of Doing Business’ more effective.

• Good governance, better infrastructure and fixing responsibility at all levels and effective implementation etc.

Ministers Satish Mahana, Siddharth Nath Singh, Mahendra Singh, Gopal Tandon, Shrikant Sharma, additional chief secretaries of concerned departments, principal secretaries, representatives of educational institutions and dignitaries were present at the event.
