Varanasi: A mentally challenged person was beaten badly by a mob in Saraimohana area on Friday after the spread of a rumour of child lifting. The police rescued him and admitted to the hospital.
According to reports, local residents caught the person and started beating him badly over suspicion of child lifter. The police, however, rescued of the man and took to the Deen Dayal Upadhya district hospital. The man is seemingly mentally unsound, as he could not tell anything about himself.
The SSP Anand Kulkarni warned that strict action against the rumour mongers. He cautioned people to beware of such rumour and inform police immediately. He said that strict action would be taken against the people involved in such incidents.
Recently a mentally unsound person was beaten in Kandwa locality on September 3. The police arrested one person while others managed to flee. Another mentally unsound man was thrashed in Gopiganj area of Bhadohi district on the same day. A girl volunteer of an NGO was also attacked in Sikandarpur area of Ballia district on August 31.
