RITES’ Rs 12,000 crore light metro and ropeway project for Varanasi

Varanasi: The city is all set to get light metro rail and ropeway for improved mobility. Following the in-principal approval for city’s urban transport system from PMO, the RITES Limited has finalized the routes for the projects.

The facility will be available on the outskirts of the city, while the old city is kept separate from it. The Ministry of Urban Development has given the funding consent to the Comprehensive Mobility Plan (CMP). The route and the action plan were presented by the RITES officials at a meeting chaired by the divisional commissioner Deepak Agrawal.

RITES has submitted a draft project report with an estimated cost of Rs 12,000 crore for smooth traffic by 2041. The project will provide direct and indirect employment to a large number of unemployed people.

According to the RITES’ proposal, the light metro will operate from BHEL in Tarna area to BHU in Lanka area having 14 to 16 stations. The route of the ropeway will be from the Godowlia crossing to Rath Yatra, and Varanasi railway station to Khidkia Ghat.
