Priyanka Gandhi Vadra visits Ubha village in Sonbhadra

Varanasi: AICC General Secretary for eastern Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Tuesday went to Ubha village to meet the kin of those persons who were killed in firing over a land dispute in Ahraura area of Sonbhadra district on July 17. Earlier, she was denied by the local administration to visit the village on July 19.

As per schedule Priyanka landed at the Lal Bahadur Shastri International airport, Babatpur in the morning. Local Congressmen including former MLA Ajay Rai welcomed her at the airport, from where she moved to Sonbhadra by road.

Soon after the massacre Priyanka left for the village on July 19 to meet the victyims, but she was stopped on the way in Narayanpur area of Mirzapur district. Later, she was taken to the Chunar Fort guest house in Mirzapur, where she and other Congress workers spent night. Before returning to New Delhi next day she met some members of the affected families at the guest house. She had also promised to visit the village to meet the affected families.

Priyanka had also announced that the Congress would provide Rs 10 lakh each to the families of deceased. A Congress delegation went to the village on July 27, and provided a cheque worth Rs 10 lakh each to the families and a cheque of Rs 1 lakh each injured.

In July 17 massacre as many as 10 persons lost their lives while 25 others were injured. The chief minister Yogi Adityanath visited the village on July 21 and assured the families for all possible help. The CM also increased the compensation from Rs 5 lakh to Rs 18.5 lakh each for families of the deceased and from Rs 50,000 to Rs 2.5 lakh to those injured in the firing. A Special Investigation Team [SIT] was constituted to probe into the matter. So far over 30 people including the main accused and gram pradhan Yagya Dutt have been arrested.
