Varanasi: The city witnessed public rage on Saturday after the death of the Unnao rape victim in Safdaganj Hospital in Delhi. People associated with different organisations expressed their anger through public rally and dharna.
A group of women under the banner of Samarpan Mahila Kalyan Samiti, Meerapur Basahi took out a rally demanding severe punishment to the rape accused at the earliest. “The Unnao rapists should also be eliminated like the Hyderabad rapists,” said the president of the organization Kanchan Maurya. They demanded proper security to women in the society and said that the government should also arrange a self-defense course for girls in academic institutions. The rally was attended by Urmila Devi, Anita Devi, Sharda Devi and many others.
While the Samajwadi Party president and former chief minister Akhilesh Yadav staged dharna in front of Vidhan Bhawan in Lucknow, his party workers sat on a dharna at the district headquarters in protest against the Unnao incident. Raising slogans against the state government, they demanded the security of girls and women.
