Varanasi: Varanasi: Over 650 tortoises being smuggled to Kolkata from Mainpuri were recovered from a truck at Naubatpur check post in Chandauli district on UP-Bihar border on Sunday night.
According to reports, acting on a tip-off the UP STF and forest department conducted a joint operation to nab the smugglers. They stopped a truck near the check post, and while searching found 678 tortoises packed in 20 sacks. The police also arrested two persons involved in smuggling. The recovered tortoises were released in Ganga.
