Lady cop, lawyer commit suicide in Azamgarh

Varanasi: Azamgarh district witnessed two cases of suicide at different places in last 12 hours. The police are investigating the matters. The bodies were sent for postmortem.

While a senior lawyer and former secretary of the Azamgarh District Bar Association Surendra Nath Singh shot himself in Sidhari area on Saturday morning, a lady constable Puja Singh committed suicide by hanging herself in Phoolpur area on Friday late evening.

According to reports, family members of the lawyer heard the sound of a gunshot in his room around 8am. When they went to the room Singh was found on the floor in a pool of blood. He died on the spot. He lived in Sunder Nagar colony in Sidhari area.

Police reached there after getting information. The SP (city) Pankaj Pandey said that the lawyer shot himself with his licensed gun. The police took the gun in their possession. The reason behind the incident was not known. Investigation is underway.  

In another incident the lady constable posted at Phoolpur Kotwali police station was found hanging in her residence. According to reports, a constable went to her residence to enquire when she did not reach police station till late evening. The doors were closed, and there was no response from inside when knocked at the doors.

Meanwhile, a local milkman also went to her house to supply milk. When they peeped into the room through a window the constable was found hanging from the ceiling.

Senior police officials including Azamgarh SP Triveni Singh reached there after getting information. The police were trying to know the reason behind the incident.  Puja, a constable of 2018 batch, was the native of Shahmadpur village in Chakia area of Chandauli district. She lived in a rented house in Phoolpur. She was posted at Phoolpur Kotwali since February 2019.
