DRI unit nabs two smugglers with 3kg gold

Varanasi: In a major breakthrough the sleuths the Varanasi unit of the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) nabbed two smugglers with 3kg foreign gold worth of about Rs. 1.19 crore in a train at Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Junction (Mughalsarai in Chandauli district on Saturday. The arrested smugglers were sent to jail on Sunday.

According to DRI sources, acting on a specific intelligence the DRI team caught the two smugglers traveling in coach A-1 of North East Express (12505) from Kamakhya to Kanpure. The arrested persons were identified as Abdul Salam and Azizul Rehman. The 17 pieces of gold concealed in specially made belt were recovered from them. The recovered gold was seized under Customs Act.  

During interrogation they disclosed that the other members of their gang used to smuggle the gold to North East states through Myanmar. The smuggled gold is later supplied to other parts of the country. This time they were carrying the gold to supply in Kanpur. Further investigation is on to trace the other members of the gang engaged in gold smuggling.

Recently, the DRI unit had also nabbed  a gold smuggler Mohammad Mohsin at the DDU Junction with one kg gold worth of approximately Rs 40 lakh while traveling in Rajdhani Express from Kolkata to New Delhi.
