Varanasi: Have you ever wondered how many difficulties the postman of your area faces during delivering mail to your doorstep? Have you ever thanked your postman for this? If not, you can express your gratitude to them on ‘National Postal Workers Day’ on 1st July.
The concept of ‘National Postal Workers’ Day’ came from America, where this special day was started in the year 1997 in the city of Seattle in Washington State in honour of the Postal workers. Gradually it started being celebrated in other countries including India. This day is celebrated in honour of the service rendered by Postal workers across the world.
Krishna Kumar Yadav, Postmaster General of Varanasi Region informed that Postal services have played an important role in the field of communication all over the world. When there were no other means of communication, Postal services were the main means of communication between people around the world. Even today, Postal employees are working with the same diligence to deliver essential things in the form of letters, parcels and money orders to the people. Regardless of winter, summer, rain, providing Postal services in remote areas, hilly, desert and inaccessible areas as well as delivering mail at the doorstep. Important documents like appointment letters, passport, driving license, aadhar, cheque book, ATM card along with prasad of various temples and TB sputum are being delivered by postmen. From distribution of medicines, masks, PPE kits, corona kits to door-to-door banking services, Postal workers have now become ‘Corona Warriors’, playing an active role in the fight against COVID-19. Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi has also appreciated the Postal services for this.
Yadav said that the postman is the most vocal face of the Postal Department. The identity of the postman has been to deliver letters and money orders, but now the postman has a smart phone in his hand and a digital device in the bag. With the launch of India Post Payments Bank, Postmen are playing a new role as an moving ATM as a part of economic and social inclusion. In Varanasi region, about 2400 postmen knock on the doors of the people everyday. On normal days, 4.5 lakhs per month and during the COVID period, 1.70 lakhs speed posts, registered letters are distributed. Apart from this, about 12 lakh ordinary letters are also distributed by postmen in Varanasi Region every month. To promote e-commerce, various innovative initiatives by the Department like cash on delivery, new mobile app to remove regular mail from letter boxes and smart phone based delivery by postmen has been taken.
