Chandauli: Soon after the agro products from Varanasi and Ghazipur made successful landing in the international markets, the Black Rice from Chandauli district, known as the ‘rice bowl’ of UP, is all set to make its entry in global markets.

A consignment of 80 MT of black rice cultivated by the farmers of Chandauli was flagged off by the divisional commissioner Deepak Agrawal on Monday from the Naveen Krishi Mandi of Chandauli. The consignment was sent to the purchaser’s shed in Ghazipur for sorting and packaging before being exported to Australia.

The Ghazipur based export firm – Sukhbir Agro Energy Limited purchased the black rice at the rate of Rs. 8,500 per quintal, which was about four times higher than the government announced MSP of Rs. 1,840 per quintal in last kharif season. The SAEL paid a cheque of Rs 68 lakhs to the farmers at a brief function, and assured them to pay higher price for improved quality of their produce.

The farmers had grown the black rice in 250 hectares of land in last kharif season, and now they are going to cultivate the crop in 500 hectares of land. The commissioner said that the training facility would be made available to the formers for growing improved quality of black rice, which is high in demand for its nutritious value. The black rice is antioxidant and good for health. Chandau district magistrate Navneet Singh Chahal encouraged farmers for growing the export quality black rice.

Unlike the perishable goods like vegetable and fruits, the rice has long self-life for storage and transportation. In recent past, green vegetables including green chilly, gourd and cucumber had been exported to Gulf countries and London from Ghazipur. Besides, mangos from Varanasi were also exported to Dubai and London.
