Thunderstorm, heavy rains claim lives, destroy crops

 

Varanasi: The rain coupled with hailstorm in last couple of days played havoc in this region claiming lives and causing huge loss to properties and farming. The local administration is assessing the losses for compensation.

According to reports, two persons Khilari Pal (65) and Jangali (62) lost their lives when they came under the debris of a wall that caved in due to heavy rain and strong wind at Dhasara village in Lalganj area on Friday night. A 32-year-old youth Kallu Pal got fracture in his leg in the incident. He was admitted to the Mirzapur district hospital for treatment.

In another incident a 13-year-old girl Bindiya also lost her life when a wall caved in at Gopalpur village in Kotwali Dehat area. The police sent the bodies for postmortem.

Earlier, a 35-year-old youth Ravi Seth, who was posted at Aurai police station as follower, lost his life after coming under the branches of a tree due to thunderstorm in Bhadohi district on Thursday night. The power supply from the Suriyawa sub-station was disrupted after a tree fell on the high tension wire near Bankat village. Several old houses collapsed in Gopiganj due to rain and fall of trees. The standing crops of wheat and pea were damaged in the fields. Bhadohi district magistrate Rajendra Prasad confirmed a casualty. He said that the loss due to the thunder storm is being estimated for compensation.

In Varanasi district, as many as 30 houses were damaged in thunderstorm at Barahi Kala village in Pindra Tehsil. The district magistrate Kaushal Raj Sharma sent the ADM (finance & revenue) Satish Pal to take stock of the situation and asses the loss. Heavy hailstorm was also witnessed in the rural areas of Araziline block that damaged the crops.
