DRI arrest two with smuggled gold
Varanasi: The Varanasi unit of the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) seized three kg gold worth Rs 1.51 crore and arrested two members of a gang of smugglers from Howrah-Delhi special train at Deen Dayal Upadhyaya railway station in Chandauli district.
In a follow-up the DRI sleuths arrested the mastermind of the gang from Lucknow with Rs 1.10 crore in cash and foreign currency worth over Rs five lakh value.
The DRI officials said that acting on a tip-off the sleuths raided the DDU railway station in the intervening night of October 4 and 5. When Howrah-New Delhi special train reached the station they caught two persons of Sultanpur district from B2 coach and recovered three bricks of gold weighting one kg each from their bags.

During investigation it came to light that the gold bricks were smuggled through Myanmar to Kolkata from where it was being transported to other places. On the basis of input given by arrested persons, simultaneous search and raid operations were conducted in Lucknow and Patna which led the recovery of cash Rs 1.10 crore in cash and foreign currency of Rs 5.45 lakh value. The DRI also arrested the mastermind this gang, who had to receive the three kg foreign origin gold.
Further investigation and raids at different places including Kolkata, Sultanpur and Lucknow are in progress to nab the other members of the gang.
