Nearly 30 percent of patients coming for treatment at HBCH and MPMMCC suffer from oral cancer
Doctors said, tobacco products accounted for more than 90 percent of oral cancer cases.
Varanasi 30-5-2021: Nearly 30 percent of cancer patients visiting Homi Bhabha Cancer Hospital (HBCH) and Mahamana Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya Cancer Centre (MPMMCC) are suffering from oral cancer. Consumption of tobacco products is directly responsible for this cancer. On the eve of World No Tobacco Day, the hospital released the data of patients, according to the data, 39012 cancer patients have been registered in the hospital since 2018, out of which 11080 (28.39 percent) patients had head and neck cancer
May 31st is celebrated as World No Tobacco Day every year in the world. Its purpose is to make people aware of the harmful effect of tobacco consumptions and also, serious and fatal diseases caused by tobacco.
Commenting on the data Dr. Aseem Mishra, Incharge of Surgical Oncology Department of HBCH and MPMMCC, said “Tobacco affects not only a human being but also his entire family. Due to its consumption, there is a huge amount of financial loss as well as serious diseases. In the hospital, almost all the oral and throat cancer patients have the habit of consumption of tobacco products, especially pan masala, bidi, cigarette, gutkha, etc. According to our Population Based Cancer Registry (PBCR) report released last year, one in three cancer among male in Varanasi were found to be related to mouth. 90 percent of oral cancer is caused by the consumption of tobacco products. Therefore, the problem of cancer can be avoided by not consuming tobacco products.”
Doctors from the Preventive Oncology Department of Mahamana Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya Cancer Centre and Homi Bhabha Cancer Hospital said that most of the patients coming to OPD consume tobacco products. In many cases, pre-cancer symptoms are seen. Such people might develop cancer in future, if they do not stop the consuming tobacco.
