2020 Tokyo Olympics: More than 70 Indian athletes have booked their berths for the grand event

 

The stage is all set for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics as the mega event will take place from 23 July to 8 August 2021. More than 70 Indian athletes have confirmed their berth for Tokyo and many more are in contention to qualify for the grand event.

In the past three summer Olympics, the number of Indian athletes has risen in terms of qualification. The same trend can be seen in the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. In the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, India has increased its sphere of participation in terms of different disciplines. For the first time, an Indian athlete will compete in Fencing and after a long time, Sailing and Equestrian will see Indian participation.

Following is the comprehensive list of Indian athletes who have confirmed their berths for the mega event:

Athletics

In the past few years, world-class performances from Indian athletes have given the nation a ray of hope in athletics. Performances from Neeraj Chopra and Shivpal Singh will play a vital role in Tokyo 2020. Indian 4×400 mixed relay team will also make their debut in Tokyo.

The following is the list of athletes who have qualified for Tokyo 2020 –

– KT Irfan, Men’s 20km race walking, individual

– Murali Sreeshankar, Men’s long jump, individual

– Neeraj Chopra, Men’s javelin throw, individual

– Sandeep Kumar, Men’s 20km race walking, individual

– Rahul Rohilla, Men’s 20km race walking, individual

– Avinash Sable, Men’s 3000m steeplechase, individual

– Shivpal Singh, Men’s javelin throw, individual

– Kamalpreet Kaur, Women’s discus throw, individual

– Bhawna Jat, Women’s 20km race walking, individual

– Priyanka Goswami, Women’s 20km race walking, individual

– 4×400 Mixed Relay

Hima Das and Dutee Chand are yet to qualify for Tokyo 2020.

Fencing

India will be competing in this discipline for the first time in its Olympics history. The Chennai-born Sabre Fencer, Bhavani Devi has scripted history by securing a spot in Tokyo Olympics. She is the first Indian to achieve this milestone.

Equestrian

India will be participating in this discipline after 20 years. Fouaad Mirza sealed his quota for Tokyo after topping the group in the individual event category at the South East Asia and Oceanic qualifiers in November 2019.

Boxing

The Indian Boxers have been promising this year and they have the potential to outperform some of the big names in Boxing. Below is the list of Boxers who have qualified for the Tokyo Olympics:

– Vikas Krishan (Men’s, 69kg)

– Pooja Rani (Women’s, 75kg)

– Satish Kumar (Men’s, 91kg)

– Mary Kom (Women’s, 51kg)

– Amit Panghal (Men’s, 52kg)

– Lovlina Borgohain (Women’s, 69kg)

– Ashish Kumar (Men’s, 75kg)

– Manish Kaushik (Men’s, 63kg)

– Simranjit Kaur (Women’s, 60kg)

Archery

Till now four Indian Archers have secured a spot in Tokyo 2020.

– Arundeep Rai, Men’s Recurve, Individual

– Atanu Das, Men’s Recurve, Individual

– Pravin Jadhav, Men’s Recurve, Individual

– Deepika Kumari, Women’s Recurve, Individual

The Men’s trio will also compete in the team competition and the women’s team qualification is still hanging due to the travel ban.

 

Gymnastics

Pranati Nayak qualified for the grand event as she cut through the Asian quota. She has become the second Gymnast after Dipa Karmakar to represent India on the Olympic platform.

Hockey

Indian Men’s team will make their 20th overall appearance in the Olympics. Whereas the Women’s team has qualified for the third time. Both teams qualified for the 2016 Rio Olympics and this time around they will look to improve the stats from the previous Olympic results.

Indian Men’s Hockey team is currently placed 4th in world rankings and is aiming for a medal at the grand stage. The Indian hockey team has won 8 gold medals, 1 silver medal, and 2 bronze medals in the Olympics.

Shooting

A staggering 15 places have been booked by Indian shooters in the Tokyo 2020 Olympic so far, making it the country’s largest contingent at any games.

– Yashaswini Singh Deswal, 10m Women’s Air Pistol, Individual

– Abhishek Verma, 10m Men’s Air Pistol, Individual

– Rahi Sarnobat, 25m Women’s Pistol, Individual

Sailing

For the first time, India will be competing in three different disciplines of sailing – Laser Radial, Laser Standard, and 49er. In April 2021, Nethra Kumanan became the first Indian woman sailor to qualify for the Olympics. Following sailors will represent India in Tokyo:

– Nethra Kumanan (Laser Radial)

– Vishnu Saravanan (Laser Standard)

– KC Ganapathy and Varun Thakkar (49er)

Wrestling

In the last three Olympic Games, India has won four medals in Wrestling. In the Tokyo Olympics, the wrestler will look to continue the medal streak. Following Wrestlers have booked the berth for Tokyo 2020 till now:

Table Tennis

So far four players have qualified for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics games.
