HBCH-MPMMCC start Advanced Cancer Surgery
Varanasi: The Homi Bhabha Cancer Hospital (HBCH) and Mahamana Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya Cancer Centre (MPMMCC), run by Tata Memorial Centre (TMC) in Varanasi, have started an advance surgery for cancer patients -Trans Oral Video-Assisted Surgery (TOVAS).
The doctors claimed that it would help cancer patients of Varanasi and adjoining regions to get comprehensive cancer care. Recently a team of doctors from HBCH performed TOVAS on a 45-years-old woman to remove a tumor located in her parapharyngeal space.
The surgeon of Head and Neck Department Dr. Aseem Mishra said, “This approach of surgery is done for tumor of the pharynx, parapharyngeal space and hypopharynx. By this technique, we have removed a tumor of parapharyngeal space of the patients. So far, we have performed three surgeries and all were successful and patients are stable”.

He said that the HBCH is probably the first hospital in Uttar Pradesh to perform this surgery. This surgery is mainly used for throat cancer and it avoids cutting the mandible and external scar on the neck. It is also beneficial for patients as no external scar is visible and in a very short duration patients are discharged from the hospital, he added.
The head of the department of Surgical Oncology Dr. Durgatosh Pandey said, “Our motive is to provide comprehensive cancer care to poor and needy patients, TOVAS is an edition to that. In coming days, we will start few more new services for cancer patients.”
