One killed two injured as shuttering falls

Sonbhadra: One labourer was killed while two others were injured seriously when the shuttering of an under-construction railway bridge between Obra Dam and Phaphrakund near Kadia village in Obra police station of Sonbhadra district caved in on Saturday.

The bridge is being constructed under the track-doubling project of Indian Railway in between Obra Dam and Phaphrakund near Kadia village in trans-Renuka area. According to reports, the shuttering on pillar number-12 caved in around 2 pm, when most of the labourers working at the site had gone for lunch. A labourer Raju (22) of Arungytola Bahera village, who was buried under the debris, died on the spot while Vijay (19) and Surendra (20) of Arungi village sustained grave injuries.

The SDM Sadar YN Chauhan, CO Obra Bhaskar Verma, inspector Obra Shailesh Rai and other officials reached the site after getting information, and started rescue operation by engaging cranes to remove the shuttering materials and debris. The injured labourers rushed to the hospital.

The district magistrate S Rajalingam said that in initial investigation conducted by the magistrates and police, the negligence of the contractor was found. No labourer had been provided with protective gears during the work. He said that bereaved family of killed labourer would be given financial assistance, and proper treatment of injured labourers is being ensured.

Police were waiting for the complaint from the family of killed labourer to lodge an FIR. The local villagers staged massive demonstration keeping the body on the road.  They were demanding compensation for the family of killed labourer and action against contractor. After exercising hard, the officials of district administration and police convinced the villagers to call off their stir.
