Azamgarh: A member of an inter-zonal gang of about 70 cyber criminals, which has been on police radar for some time, was caught in Deedarganj area on Tuesday.
The arrested person was identified as Ankur Ram, who carried a reward of Rs. 25,000, However, his aide managed to flee from the scene. The police recovered several ATM cards and a pistol from him. During interrogation, he disclosed that there are 70 members in the gang operating in various districts. The kingpin of the gang Naveen Gautam was arrested a month back. He was wanted in 14 criminal cases. He was lodged in jail 14 times in the past.
“As the gang is operating in various districts, we are going to initiate Gangster Act against this inter-zonal gang of cyber criminals,” said Azamgarh SP Triveni Singh adding that five members of this gang were arrested on June 16.

The modus operandi of this gang, which is engaged in withdrawing money from accounts of innocent people by changing or cloning their ATM cards, is that the members remain hovering around ATM outlets to spot their potential preys. They offer help to those who encounter difficulty in withdrawing money. In the name of help, they stealthily change the ATM cards. They make clones of the ATM cards of others and withdraw the amount.
Singh said that the gang has spread its network in several districts of the state. He said that the history sheet of each member of this gang is being opened. The process of confiscating their properties will also be initiated.
