Varanasi: Soon the markets of London will have a new guest guest from India -the famous Banarasi Langda mango. The first consignment of 1.5 MT mangoes will be flagged off from Varanasi on Sunday for the exported to London.
Recently the Banarasi Langda had hit the Dubai markets in the last week of May. The first consignment of 3 MT Banarasi Langda mangoes was sent to the packing units of Lucknow from where it was transported to Delhi for exporting to Dubai by air-cargo. The export was made with the support of Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA).

Known as `king of fruits’, Langda is the main variety of mango in Varanasi region. This variety is also known as Malda in parts of Bihar and West Bengal. Among Langda the Banarasi Langda is considered to be superior due to its unique flavour.
The assistant general manager of APEDA Dr. CB Singh said that the consignment would be flagged off by the divisional commissioner Deepak Agrawal and district magistrate Kaushal Raj Sharma from perishable cargo centre Raja Talab on Sunday afternoon. The mangoes would be sent to Lucknow for packaging before exporting to London. He said that the consignment would include Langda, Ramkheda and Dussehri varieties.

He said that efforts are on to make Varanasi a hub of agricultural export. APEDA intensified its efforts to promote exports from agriculture produce rich regions of India in 2019 after the processing and packing of produces consolidated from the FPOs started at cargo facility, Rajatalab after its inauguration by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi in July 2018.
