Ganja worth of Rs three crores seized by DRI, two arrested

Varanasi: In a major breakthrough the sleuth of Varanasi unit of the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) caught a big consignment of contraband worth of Rs three crore and arrested two drug peddlers. The arrested smugglers were sent to jail on Wednesday.  

According to the DRI sources, a specific information was received that a consignment of ganja was being transported to Varanasi in a truck (UP 63 T 2869). Acting on the input, the DRI team cordoned off the area between Tengra turning and Dafi Toll plaza on the intervening night of February 17 and 18 to intercept the truck.

The DRI team succeeded in nabbing the truck and two smugglers identified as Mataru Shankar Bind of Kachhwa area of Mirzapur district and Mohammed Khurshid of Koraput (Odisha). The DRI recovered around 20 quintals ganja worth of Rs. three crores.

During interrogation, they confessed that they were involved in ganja smuggling for a long time. They had links with the big drug smugglers in UP, Haryana and Delhi. Earlier, the DRI had also seized 12 quintals ganja while being supplied to Varanasi and Mirzapur in October 2019.
